Vatican Confirms Pope Francis Suffers from Pneumonia
Pope Francis, aged 88, has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, according to a Vatican statement released on February 18, 2025. The Pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing a respiratory infection that initially presented as bronchitis.
A recent chest CT scan confirmed the progression to pneumonia in both lungs, necessitating further pharmacological therapy. Despite the complexity of his condition, the Vatican reports that Pope Francis remains in good spirits. However, his advanced age and history of respiratory issues, including the removal of part of his right lung in his youth and a previous hospitalization for pneumonia in 2023, add to the seriousness of his current health challenges.
The Vatican has canceled his upcoming engagements, including the Jubilee audience scheduled for February 22, and has not provided a specific timeline for his recovery or return to official duties.
