Political Ally Arrest: El-Rufai’s Warning Ahead of 2027
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has issued a stern warning of political retribution against those he holds responsible for the recent detention of his longtime ally, Bashir Saidu. Saidu, who has been El-Rufai’s friend for over 53 years and has served in various capacities including Commissioner of Local Government, Commissioner of Finance, and Chief of Staff, was released after spending 50 days in custody. El-Rufai described Saidu’s detention as an “abduction and unjustified incarceration,” alleging it was politically motivated due to Saidu’s influence in Kaduna North and Central politics. He emphasized that those behind this act would face consequences by the 2027 elections, stating, “The payback to those behind it will be known on or before the 2027 elections, In sha Allah.” El-Rufai also indicated plans to disclose more details about the involvement of certain police officers and judges in the incident, urging Nigerians to “stand by for some interesting insights.”
This development comes amid reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is considering suspending and expelling El-Rufai over alleged anti-party activities. El-Rufai has been openly critical of the party’s leadership, accusing it of poor governance and a lack of internal democracy. His recent remarks at a national conference, where he described the APC as a “one-man show” and blamed “illiterates and cunning people” for Nigeria’s leadership problems, have reportedly angered party leaders. In response, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary dismissed his comments as desperate, and sources reveal plans to suspend him from his ward and expel him to prevent him from leaving the party unchallenged.
El-Rufai’s recent actions, including visits to key political figures across party lines, have fueled speculation about his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections. His proactive approach signals a calculated strategy aimed at positioning himself as a formidable contender for the nation’s highest office. However, these moves have also led to tensions within the APC, with reports suggesting that the party is considering disciplinary actions against him for alleged anti-party activities.
In response to El-Rufai’s criticisms, the Presidency has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is ready for any challenge from opposition leaders during the 2027 general election. The Presidency described the activities of opposition leaders, including El-Rufai, as “distracting” and “Machiavellian,” advising them to wait until the next poll before testing their popularity with Nigerians.
