Yobe School Incident: Student Fatality and Injuries Reported

On February 20, 2025, a tragic incident occurred at Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Potiskum, Yobe State, when a classroom wall collapsed, resulting in the death of one female student and injuries to four others. The collapse happened around noon as students were preparing for their lunch break.

Dr. Bukar Bukar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, confirmed the incident, stating that 50 Senior Secondary 2 students were in the affected block, which comprised two classrooms. He noted that a section of the block’s corridor collapsed, leading to the casualties. The injured students are reportedly in stable condition.

In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Housing has established a committee to investigate the cause of the collapse and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
