IPOB Leader Cleared of Terrorism, Receives N5m Damages

On February 20, 2025, the Federal High Court in Owerri, Imo State, presided over by Justice I.N. Oweibo, exonerated Chika Edoziem, the Head of the Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from charges of terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, and violent criminal activities.

The court declared the previous designation of Edoziem as a wanted person by the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff as illegal and unconstitutional, citing a violation of his fundamental rights to dignity.

Consequently, the court ordered an immediate retraction of the declaration, a public apology in two national newspapers, and awarded ₦5 million in damages to Edoziem for the infringement of his rights.
