Governor Adeleke Confirms Osun LG Elections This Saturday

Osun Local Government Elections Proceed Amid Federal Concerns

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has confirmed that the local government elections will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, February 22, 2025, despite warnings from the Federal Government.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, urged Governor Adeleke to suspend the elections, citing a Court of Appeal decision that reinstated previously sacked local government officials whose tenure is set to expire in October. Fagbemi emphasized the need to avoid actions that could incite unnecessary violence in the state.

In response, Governor Adeleke maintained that the elections would proceed as planned, expressing satisfaction with the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission’s (OSSIEC) preparations. He stated that voters are ready to exercise their rights and that the state is committed to allowing the courts to determine the correctness of the current situation.

The situation has led to mixed reactions among Osun State residents. Some citizens have called for adequate security measures to prevent potential violence during the polls, especially in light of recent clashes between members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which resulted in multiple casualties.

Despite the Federal Government’s appeal, the Osun State High Court in Ilesa ruled that vacancies exist in all 30 local government areas, mandating OSSIEC to conduct the elections as scheduled.

As the election date approaches, the state government has assured the public of its commitment to a peaceful and transparent electoral process, urging all stakeholders to maintain peace and order.
