Senate Speech Highlights Dangers of Sextortion Schemes
South Carolina State Representative Brandon Guffey delivered an emotional speech before the Senate, sharing the tragic loss of his 17-year-old son, Gavin, to suicide in July 2022. Gavin fell victim to a sextortion scam, where an individual posing as a girl coerced him into sharing intimate images and then attempted to extort money from him. Overwhelmed by the situation, Gavin took his own life.
In response to this personal tragedy, Rep. Guffey has been a vocal advocate for legislation aimed at combating sextortion. He introduced “Gavin’s Law,” which seeks to make sexual extortion a felony offense in South Carolina, with harsher penalties when the victim is a minor. The bill has garnered bipartisan support and aims to deter criminals from targeting children within the state.
Rep. Guffey’s advocacy extends beyond legislation; he is committed to raising awareness about the dangers of online predators and the prevalence of sextortion schemes. He emphasizes the importance of open communication between parents and children regarding online interactions and urges victims to seek help without fear of shame.
Through his efforts, Rep. Guffey hopes to honor his son’s memory by preventing similar tragedies and ensuring that other families do not endure the same pain.
