Nigerian Drug Kingpin Arrested in Romance Scam Operation

Romance Scams: The Deceptive Tactics of a Drug Kingpin

In a significant international operation, a 59-year-old Nigerian identified as K. Jeff was arrested in Lagos for orchestrating a complex scheme that deceived individuals, including South Koreans, into smuggling illicit drugs. The arrest, which took place on February 13, 2025, was the result of a collaborative effort between South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) and Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

K. Jeff led a Nigeria-based drug cartel with operations extending across Southeast Asia, Africa, Korea, the Americas, and Europe. The syndicate employed romance and investment scams to lure victims online, convincing them to transport illicit substances disguised as gifts or everyday items. These unsuspecting individuals were manipulated into becoming drug couriers, often under the pretense of delivering innocuous packages.

The investigation uncovered that over a five-year period, the cartel successfully smuggled significant quantities of drugs into South Korea. Authorities confiscated 45.6 kilograms of narcotics, including 28.4 kilograms of methamphetamine, and arrested 38 individuals connected to the operation. This case highlights the evolving tactics of international drug trafficking organizations and underscores the importance of global cooperation in combating such illicit activities.
