Nigeria's Decline Compared to IBB's Era - Peter Obi

Peter Obi: Nigeria’s Current Struggles vs. IBB’s Leadership

At a recent event in Abuja commemorating the launch of former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s (IBB) book, Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, expressed concerns about Nigeria’s current socio-economic state. Obi highlighted that, compared to Babangida’s era, Nigeria has experienced regression in key development indicators.

He noted that nations such as Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, and Ghana, which were on par with Nigeria in the low Human Development Index (HDI) category during Babangida’s tenure, have since advanced to medium and high HDI levels. In contrast, Nigeria remains in the low HDI category, indicating stagnation or decline.

Obi also commended Babangida’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic landscape, particularly his support for entrepreneurship and private sector growth, which led to substantial advancements in the financial sector during his administration.
