Court Appearance for Sergeant in Valentine’s Day Tragedy

A police sergeant, Ngudumane Hamlet Mahlalela, has appeared before the Protea Magistrates’ Court in South Africa for allegedly fatally shooting his wife, Sergeant Jane Mahlalela, on Valentine’s Day. The incident occurred at their home in Protea Glen, Soweto, following an argument.

After the shooting, Ngudumane reportedly fled with their 10-year-old son in a black Mercedes Benz. He remained at large until turning himself in at the Moroka police station; the child was later found safe at a relative’s residence. The court has postponed the case to next Wednesday for a bail hearing.

Neighbors described Ngudumane as a “reserved man who cherished his family,” making the incident particularly shocking to the community.
