N22m Levy by Bello Turji on Deputy Governor’s Village
Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has reportedly imposed a levy of ₦22 million on four villages in Sokoto State, including Garin Idi, the hometown of Deputy Governor Engineer Idris Gobir. This action comes in retaliation for the killing of one of Turji’s men during a recent military operation. The imposed levy is intended to compensate for the loss of his associate and missing firearms resulting from the operation.
Hon. Aminu Boza Boza, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing Sabon Birni West Constituency, confirmed Turji’s presence in the eastern part of Isa Local Government Area. Boza highlighted that Turji initially demanded ₦25 million per village but reduced the amount to ₦22 million after negotiations. He expressed concern over the military’s inability to sustain operations in the region, noting that such withdrawals often lead to increased bandit reprisals against local communities.
In addition to the levy, Turji has demanded ₦250,000 from each family of the 13 worshippers abducted approximately two weeks ago in Sabon Birni Local Government Area. So far, five captives have been released following payment of the ransom.
