Governor Muftwang Halts Mining in Plateau Due to Insecurity

Plateau State Mining Activities Suspended by Governor Muftwang

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has signed Executive Order 001 of 2025, suspending all mining activities across the state to address escalating security concerns and environmental degradation.

The suspension aims to curb illegal mining, mitigate land degradation, combat child labor, and tackle security threats such as banditry, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and illegal firearms possession, which have been linked to unregulated foreign miners.

To oversee the implementation of mining reforms, Governor Mutfwang has inaugurated a Technical Committee on Mining Reform, chaired by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Philemon Dafi. This committee is tasked with verifying mining licenses, gathering data on mining sites, regulating illegal operations, and recommending designated mining areas to prevent encroachment on residential lands.

The Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Majesty Da Jacob Buba, has expressed support for the governor’s decision, emphasizing the commitment of traditional rulers to safeguard the state’s future.
