Osun Elections Begin Despite AGF and Police Concerns
Despite advisories from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Nigeria Police Force to suspend the local government elections scheduled for today, February 22, 2025, in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has proceeded with the electoral process. The AGF, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, recommended postponing the elections, referencing a recent Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated council chairpersons previously dismissed in 2022, suggesting that the positions were not vacant.
Similarly, the Nigeria Police Force, citing credible intelligence reports indicating potential violence and significant security threats, advised the state government to reconsider and suspend the planned elections. The Force emphasized that various groups were mobilizing to instigate unrest and disrupt public peace if the elections proceeded.
In response, Governor Adeleke dismissed these concerns, asserting that the electorate was prepared to exercise their voting rights. He emphasized that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) had made adequate preparations for the elections and that multiple political parties were participating, ensuring a level playing field.
Supporting the governor’s decision, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar commended Adeleke for proceeding with the elections. Atiku highlighted the importance of local council elections in a democratic system and urged security agencies and polling officials to perform their duties responsibly.
Despite the legal and security advisories, the elections are underway, with Governor Adeleke casting his vote early this morning in Ede North Local Government Area.
