Elderly Couple’s Arrest Highlights Parenting Issues in Afghanistan

Peter and Barbie Reynolds, a British couple aged 79 and 75 respectively, were arrested by the Taliban in Afghanistan on February 1, 2025, for allegedly teaching parenting skills to mothers.

The couple, who have lived in Afghanistan for 18 years, were detained in Bamiyan province along with their Chinese-American friend, Faye Hall. Their family has expressed deep concern, especially given Peter’s need for heart medication, and has appealed for their immediate release.

The couple’s organization, Rebuild, has been providing educational programs attended by both men and women, focusing on participatory learning and communication skills. Despite prior approval from local authorities, their activities have now come under scrutiny. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office has been contacted but has yet to comment on the situation.
