Enugu to Ebonyi: A Journey Cut Short by Fate
In a tragic turn of events, a female prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member lost her life in a road accident while en route to the orientation camp in Afikpo, Ebonyi State. The incident occurred on January 20, 2025, when a 14-seater commercial bus transporting 12 prospective corps members from Enugu collided with a stationary Mercedes-Benz tipper truck near Amenu village in Okposi, along the Amasiri-Okigwe route. The bus reportedly lost control before ramming into the parked truck.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the bus, operated by Enugu North Mass Transit, was conveying Batch C Stream II corps members to the NYSC orientation camp. The deceased, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured were promptly rescued by local residents and security personnel and transported to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) for medical treatment.
The Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Igwe Henry, confirmed the incident, noting that by the time FRSC personnel arrived, the victims had already been evacuated. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed on the part of the commercial bus may have contributed to the accident.
The Ebonyi State NYSC Coordinator, Foluke Oladeinde, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and visited the hospital to oversee the care of the injured. This tragedy has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of road transportation for NYSC members traveling to orientation camps, with calls for improved road conditions and stricter safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
