The Last Moment: Woman’s Fatal Fall from Train
On February 20, 2025, 53-year-old Russian tourist Olga Perminova tragically lost her life in Sri Lanka while attempting to take a selfie. While leaning out of a moving train on the renowned Podi Menike route between Badulla and Hali Ela, she was struck by a rock and fell, sustaining severe head injuries. Despite prompt medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries.
This incident underscores the dangers associated with taking selfies in precarious situations. A 2021 study reported at least 379 selfie-related deaths worldwide between 2008 and 2021, with countries like India, the United States, and Russia recording the highest numbers.
In a similar event in December 2024, a tourist in Taiwan was struck by a train while taking a selfie but survived with injuries.
