Rome Diversion: American Airlines Flight and Fake Bomb Scare
On February 23, 2025, American Airlines Flight 292, en route from New York’s JFK Airport to New Delhi, was diverted to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport due to a bomb threat received via email.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, carrying approximately 200 passengers and crew, was over the Caspian Sea when the crew was alerted to the potential security issue. Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets escorted the aircraft to Rome, where it landed safely.
Upon inspection by law enforcement, the threat was deemed non-credible, and the aircraft was cleared for departure. Passengers were accommodated overnight in Rome before continuing their journey to New Delhi. American Airlines emphasized that safety and security are their top priorities and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
