Tragic Shooting of Katsina Varsity Student by CJTF

In a tragic incident on February 23, 2025, Saidu Abdulkadir, a 25-year-old 400-level student from the Department of Agricultural Extension at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, was fatally shot by a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). The incident occurred around 11:06 a.m. in the Kashe-Naira Quarters area. Abdulkadir was traveling on a commercial motorcycle operated by 40-year-old Abubakar Yusuf when they were signaled to stop by four CJTF members in a Hilux vehicle.

Upon allegedly failing to comply, one CJTF operative opened fire, injuring both individuals. Abdulkadir sustained gunshot wounds to his thigh and hips and was later pronounced dead at the Orthopedic Hospital in Katsina. Yusuf sustained a thigh injury and is receiving medical treatment.

The incident has sparked significant outrage within the university community. Students organized a peaceful protest, demanding justice for Abdulkadir. However, reports indicate that police officers responded by firing tear gas at the demonstrators.

The Katsina State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the shooting. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the CJTF operative responsible for the fatal shooting. The police have also reinforced security measures in the area to prevent further unrest.
