
Ugandan Incident Claims Life of Nigerian Footballer
Abubakar Lawal, a 29-year-old Nigerian footballer playing for Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club, tragically died after falling from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on the morning of February 24, 2025.
According to Ugandan police, Lawal visited a Tanzanian friend, Omary Naima, who had been residing in room 416 of the mall since February 2024. Naima reported that she left Lawal in the room preparing tea and went to a game center within the mall. Shortly after, around 8:00 AM, Lawal allegedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Authorities are currently retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Vipers Sports Club expressed their grief in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning.” They added that his body has been transferred to a medical facility for a postmortem examination, with funeral arrangements to be communicated in due course.
Before joining Vipers SC in July 2022, Lawal had a stint with AS Kigali in Rwanda. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the football community in Uganda and beyond.
