IBB’s Revelation: Igbos Not Behind 1996 Coup
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has called for an official apology and ₦10 trillion in compensation from President Bola Tinubu, following former military President General Ibrahim Babangida’s recent disclosure that the 1966 coup was not an Igbo-led initiative, as previously alleged.
In a statement, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Deputy National President of Ohanaeze’s faction, emphasized that Babangida’s revelation necessitates a reassessment of the historical narrative that has unjustly portrayed the Igbo community as antagonists in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Isiguzoro highlighted the catastrophic consequences of this misrepresentation, notably the Nigerian Civil War, which resulted in the loss of approximately three million Igbo lives, predominantly women and children.
Ohanaeze asserts that an official apology from President Tinubu would serve as a significant step toward national reconciliation and healing. The organization also contends that the proposed ₦10 trillion compensation is a necessary measure to address the extensive socio-economic and psychological damages inflicted on the Igbo people over the past decades.
