Africa Cup of Nations: CAF Hits Back at Jamie Carragher
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has responded to recent remarks by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who suggested that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is “not a major tournament.” Carragher’s comments were made during a Sky Sports broadcast analyzing Mohamed Salah’s prospects for the Ballon d’Or. He implied that Salah’s chances are diminished because Egypt doesn’t participate in “major tournaments.”
In response, CAF took to social media, posting images highlighting the significance of AFCON with the caption: “Major Tournament. That’s the tweet.”
Former Egypt international Ahmed Elmohamady, a two-time AFCON winner, also criticized Carragher’s remarks. He stated, “Jamie Carragher doesn’t know what a major tournament is because he never won one. AFCON is a major tournament. So proud to have won it twice.”
The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the recognition and respect of African football tournaments on the global stage.
