Elon Musk's Ultimatum to Government Employees

Weekly Accomplishments: A New Mandate from Musk

Elon Musk, serving as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump’s administration, recently issued a directive to all U.S. federal employees. On February 22, 2025, Musk announced via social media that federal workers would receive an email requesting them to list five accomplishments from the previous week, stating that failure to respond would be considered a resignation.

The subsequent email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) bore the subject line “What did you do last week?” and instructed employees to reply with approximately five bullet points detailing their weekly achievements, copying their managers in the response. The initial deadline for submission was set for 11:59 p.m. on February 24, 2025.

This directive led to confusion and pushback within various federal agencies. Some agency leaders, including Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, advised their staff to disregard the email, citing concerns over the disclosure of sensitive information and questioning the appropriateness of the request.

In response to the widespread confusion and criticism, the OPM later clarified that responding to the email was voluntary and that non-compliance would not be interpreted as a resignation. They also emphasized the importance of adhering to existing laws and agency policies regarding the disclosure of work-related information.

Despite the OPM’s clarification, Musk reiterated his stance, suggesting that those who did not take the email seriously would be “furthering their career elsewhere.”
