Macron's Stance: Ukraine's Sovereignty Matters

France’s Perspective on Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom

French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized that any peace agreement regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict must not equate to Ukraine’s surrender. During a joint press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump on February 24, 2025, Macron stated, “This peace must not mean a surrender of Ukraine. It must not mean a ceasefire without guarantees.” He underscored the necessity for such an agreement to uphold Ukrainian sovereignty and provide security assurances.

Macron also highlighted the importance of European involvement in the peace process, proposing the deployment of European peacekeeping troops to Ukraine to maintain stability post-agreement. He noted that while the U.S. should support this mission, Europe should take a leading role in ensuring Ukraine’s security.

President Trump expressed optimism about the conflict nearing a resolution, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin might accept the presence of European peacekeepers in Ukraine. However, Macron cautioned that any peace deal must be robust and not compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty.
