Rising Casualties: DRC Conflict Claims 7000 Lives

DRC Prime Minister Reports 7,000 Deaths Since January

Since January 2025, escalating conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has resulted in over 7,000 deaths and displaced approximately 450,000 people, according to Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka. The violence, primarily involving the M23 rebel group, has led to the destruction of nearly 90 displacement camps.

The M23’s recent offensives have seen them capture key cities such as Goma and Bukavu, marking the most significant escalation in over a decade. The DRC government, along with the United Nations and Western powers, accuses Rwanda of supporting M23 with arms and troops, allegations that Rwanda denies.

Prime Minister Tuluka has called for international intervention and the imposition of sanctions to address the humanitarian crisis, which includes mass displacements and reports of summary executions. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also highlighted severe human rights abuses in the DRC, emphasizing the urgent need for global attention to the situation.
