South-East Representatives Call for NAFDAC to Reopen Market

NAFDAC Urged by South-East Leaders to Reopen Onitsha Market

The South-East Caucus of the House of Representatives has called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to reopen the Onitsha Bridgehead Medicine Market in Anambra State.

The market was recently sealed due to concerns over the distribution of counterfeit and adulterated drugs. While the lawmakers condemn the activities of those involved in the sale of fake medications, they emphasize that the indefinite closure of the market adversely affects legitimate traders and the healthcare needs of the South-East and South-South regions.

They urge NAFDAC to prosecute the offenders promptly and consider reopening the market to allow genuine businesses to resume operations.

The caucus also highlights the importance of distinguishing between unscrupulous traders and legitimate business owners within the market. They recommend that NAFDAC implements measures to sanitize the medical supply chain without imposing collective punishment on all traders. Additionally, they call on the Nigeria Customs Service to enhance border security to prevent the influx of counterfeit drugs into the country.
