Australian Nurse Charged for Threatening Israelis

Nurse Faces Charges Over Threats to Israeli Lives

A Sydney nurse, Sarah Abu Lebdeh, has been arrested and charged after allegedly making antisemitic threats in a video filmed at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. In the video, Abu Lebdeh reportedly stated she would refuse to treat Israeli patients and suggested she might have harmed such patients in the past.

She has been charged with three Commonwealth offences: threatening violence to a group, using a carriage service to threaten to kill, and using a carriage service to menace, harass, or offend. These charges carry significant penalties, with the most severe being up to 10 years in prison. Abu Lebdeh has been released on strict bail conditions, including prohibitions on leaving the country and using social media, and is scheduled to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on March 19.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various communities and officials. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and assured the public that both individuals involved would not be employed by NSW Health again. The Anti-Defamation League also praised the charges, highlighting the importance of zero tolerance for violence and antisemitism, especially within the medical profession.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the involvement of other individuals. To date, 14 people have been arrested, and 76 charges have been laid under Strike Force Pearl, the task force established to address such incidents.
