Couple’s Ordeal: Sitting Beside Deceased Passenger
An Australian couple, Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Collin, endured a distressing experience on a Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne to Doha when a fellow passenger collapsed and died near their seats. Despite the crew’s immediate efforts to revive the woman, she could not be saved.
The deceased was then placed in Ring’s seat, compelling him to sit next to the body for approximately four hours. Collin, visibly upset, was comforted by another passenger during this time. Upon landing, medical personnel boarded the aircraft to remove the body, during which passengers were instructed to remain seated. Ring emphasized the need for emotional support, expressing that Qatar Airways had not adequately addressed their well-being following the incident. The airline has since apologized and stated they are reaching out to the affected passengers.
In-flight deaths, while relatively rare, do occur. A 2021 study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine reported 18.2 medical emergencies per million passengers annually, with a mortality rate of 0.21 per million. Flight crews are trained to manage such situations with sensitivity, securing the deceased for landing. However, the psychological impact on nearby passengers can be significant, underscoring the importance of providing appropriate support and counseling in the aftermath.
