FG Calls for Investigation into Abubakar Lawal's Death

Inquiry Requested into Nigerian Footballer’s Untimely Demise

The Nigerian government has called for a comprehensive investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. Lawal, a 29-year-old forward for Vipers Sports Club, reportedly fell from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on February 24, 2025. Initial reports suggested he died in a motorcycle accident along Entebbe Road, but later findings indicated a possible fall from the shopping mall balcony.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), described the incident as “pathetic and suspicious,” emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation without any cover-up. The Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has requested a full autopsy and a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death.

Ugandan police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Preliminary reports indicate that Lawal visited a Tanzanian friend, Omary Naima, residing in room 416 of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade. Naima reportedly left Lawal in her room preparing tea before the incident occurred.

Nigerian footballer Ahmed Musa has also called for an investigation, expressing concerns over conflicting reports about Lawal’s death. He urged the Nigerian government and the Nigeria Football Federation to collaborate with Ugandan authorities to ensure justice is served.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through Minister Yusuf Tuggar, has conveyed deep sorrow over Lawal’s passing and is committed to ensuring a transparent investigation. The Nigerian High Commission in Kampala is collaborating with local authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to provide necessary consular support to Lawal’s family.

Abubakar Lawal was not only a professional footballer but also a final-year Business Administration student at Cavendish University in Uganda. His untimely death has prompted calls for a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.
