Akpabio Altercation: Senator Natasha Under Review
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has been referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions following a heated dispute over seating arrangements with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The altercation occurred on February 20, 2025, when Akpoti-Uduaghan discovered her seat had been reassigned without prior notice. Her refusal to comply with the new seating arrangement led to a confrontation during the plenary session.
Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions, describing them as “extreme intransigence” and emphasizing that the Senate is a place for legislative duties, not for creating content. He urged the leadership to enforce discipline, stating, “Where there is sin, there must be a penalty.”
Senate President Akpabio noted that while members are permitted to sit anywhere, official contributions must be made from their designated seats. He suggested that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s unfamiliarity with Senate procedures, possibly due to missing initial orientation sessions, may have contributed to the incident.
The Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imaseun, has been tasked with reviewing the incident and is expected to report its findings within two weeks.
