British Citizen Arrested for 25-Year Visa Overstay in Thailand
A 60-year-old British man has been arrested in Thailand for overstaying his 30-day tourist visa by more than 25 years, marking a record overstay of 9,135 days. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, entered Thailand on January 9, 2000, and remained in the country without proper authorization. He was apprehended on February 24, 2025, in Chiang Mai during an immigration crackdown on visa overstayers.
During his time in Thailand, the man lived in Bangkok for 13 years, where he formed a relationship with a Thai woman and had a child. Approximately 12 years ago, the family relocated to Chiang Mai for economic reasons. Despite not holding formal employment, he sustained himself through financial support from his family in the United Kingdom.
Remarkably, in 2018, he managed to renew his British passport, which remained devoid of any immigration stamps, indicating his prolonged unauthorized stay. Following his arrest, Thai authorities have initiated deportation proceedings to return him to the UK.
This case highlights the challenges faced by immigration systems in tracking long-term visa overstayers and underscores the importance of adhering to international travel regulations.
