Policy Changes on Transgender Service Members

Transgender Soldiers: A Policy Review

In a recent policy shift, the U.S. Department of Defense has announced plans to discharge transgender service members from the military unless they obtain specific exemptions. This move follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in January 2025, which prohibits transgender individuals from serving openly in the armed forces.

The Pentagon’s internal memo, submitted as part of a legal case, outlines that service members diagnosed with or treated for gender dysphoria will be disqualified from military service unless they meet a specific warfighting necessity and adhere to stringent behavioral restrictions.

The policy also halts gender-affirming medical procedures for current service members and bars transgender individuals from enlisting. Legal challenges have been mounted against this policy, with advocates arguing it violates constitutional protections and undermines the rights of transgender individuals willing to serve their country.
