Trump-Pardoned January 6 Convict Involved in Shooting

In a tragic incident on January 27, 2025, Matthew Huttle, a 42-year-old Indiana resident recently pardoned by President Donald Trump for his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, was fatally shot by a Jasper County sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop. The encounter occurred near the Pulaski County line when Huttle was pulled over for speeding. Bodycam footage reveals that Huttle, appearing nervous, expressed fears of returning to jail and threatened self-harm.

As the deputy attempted to arrest him, Huttle resisted, fled to his minivan, and reached for a firearm, prompting the deputy to discharge his weapon multiple times. A loaded 9mm handgun and additional ammunition were later recovered from Huttle’s vehicle. Following a review, Clinton County Deputy Prosecutor Chris Vawter determined that the deputy was legally justified in using lethal force.

Huttle had previously been convicted in 2023 for entering and remaining in a restricted building during the Capitol riot, resulting in a six-month federal prison sentence. He was released in July 2024 and received a presidential pardon on January 20, 2025. Despite the pardon, Huttle faced multiple arrests post-release and was scheduled for a court appearance on February 10, 2025, related to his most recent charges.
