Allegations of Sexual Harassment: Saraki Calls for Inquiry

Saraki Challenges Akpabio: Submit to Sexual Harassment Probe

Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has called for an open and transparent investigation into the recent allegations and counter-allegations between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Saraki emphasized that such an investigation is essential to uphold the integrity and public perception of the Senate. He urged both parties to cooperate fully with the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions during the probe.

Saraki highlighted a precedent from his tenure as Senate President, where he personally appeared before the Ethics Committee to address allegations against him, demonstrating the importance of transparency in such matters.

Similarly, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations against Akpabio. Atiku stressed that such allegations should not be dismissed without a comprehensive and transparent inquiry, underscoring the need to protect the integrity of the Senate and ensure that leaders uphold the highest standards of conduct.

These developments follow a recent incident during a Senate plenary session on February 20, 2025, where Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office. The allegations have sparked widespread reactions, prompting calls for a transparent investigation to uncover the truth and maintain public trust in the legislative institution.

In response to the allegations, Akpabio has denied any wrongdoing, describing the claims as unfounded and an attempt to tarnish his reputation.

The Senate is expected to address the matter by conducting a comprehensive investigation to ensure accountability and uphold the principles of justice within the legislative framework.
