Tragic Road Accident Claims 12 Lives in Benin-Auchi

Devastating Accident on Benin-Auchi Road: 12 Dead

A tragic accident occurred early Saturday morning along the Benin-Auchi highway in Edo State, resulting in the deaths of 12 passengers who were burned beyond recognition.

The incident took place around 5 a.m. at Igueoviobo community, near an army checkpoint, and involved a Toyota Hiace bus and an articulated truck.

According to Cyril Mathew, the Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the bus departed from Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory, heading to Benin, when it collided with the oncoming truck en route to Auchi. The collision led to a fire that engulfed the bus, making it impossible to rescue the occupants.

Preliminary investigations suggest that driver fatigue may have been a contributing factor, with the bus driver possibly falling asleep at the wheel. The truck driver and his assistant reportedly escaped the accident unhurt.

The FRSC has retrieved the vehicle’s manifest and is contacting the families of the deceased. Mathew emphasized the importance of drivers taking breaks during long journeys to prevent such tragedies.
