First TV Interview: Zelensky Addresses White House Clash
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the recent heated exchange with U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance during his first television interview since the incident. Speaking with Fox News, Zelensky expressed gratitude toward the American people for their support, stating, “I’m very thankful to Americans for all your support. You helped us a lot from the very beginning… you helped us to survive.”
When questioned about the need for an apology following the Oval Office confrontation, Zelensky responded, “I respect the president and I respect American people. I think we have to be very open and very honest, and am not sure we did something bad.”
Despite acknowledging that the clash was “not good” for either side, Zelensky remains optimistic about mending relations with President Trump. He emphasized the enduring bond between the nations, noting, “Yes, of course [the relationship can be salvaged], because it’s relations [between] more than two presidents. It’s historical relations, strong relations between our people.”
The confrontation arose during discussions on Ukraine’s need for security guarantees before engaging in peace talks with Russia. Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s desire for a lasting peace, stating that any agreement must include assurances to prevent future aggression. He remarked, “Everybody is afraid Putin will come back tomorrow… It’s about just and lasting peace. We have to be very strong at the table of negotiations.”
Zelensky also addressed comments from U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who had criticized his conduct during the meeting. The Ukrainian president asserted that decisions about Ukraine’s leadership rest solely with its people, saying, “Americans vote for [the] American president… only Ukraine… vote[s] for their president.”
