The incident occurred as she and her band members were traveling from a performance in Mobile to Atlanta; their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was involved in a collision, resulting in the vehicle flipping over and being struck by a big rig.
Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone began her illustrious career in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, one of the pioneering female hip-hop groups. She later transitioned to a successful solo career, releasing her debut album, “Black Diamond,” in 1999, which featured notable tracks such as “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” and “Life Story.” Her 2001 album, “Mahogany Soul,” included her most famous song, “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”
Throughout her career, Stone collaborated with numerous prominent artists, including D’Angelo, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott, and Snoop Dogg. She released a total of ten solo albums, with her music spanning genres like R&B, soul, and neo-soul. In addition to her musical achievements, Stone appeared in films such as “The Hot Chick” and “Ride Along,” as well as various television shows and Broadway productions.
Stone’s death was confirmed by her daughter, Diamond Stone, who expressed her grief in a heartfelt Facebook post stating, “My mommy is gone.” Stone is also survived by her son, Michael, whom she had with neo-soul singer D’Angelo.
Just days before her untimely death, Stone had announced plans for an extensive UK tour and other projects, indicating her enduring passion for music and performance.
