Former Governor Udenwa on Election Financing
Former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa, has expressed concerns about the influence of money in Nigerian elections, suggesting that with sufficient funds, politicians can manipulate electoral outcomes.
In a recent interview on the “State Affairs” podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, Udenwa highlighted that the electorate often overlooks the character and qualifications of candidates, focusing instead on financial inducements. He stated that politicians can “buy everybody,” including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), police, army, and voters, to secure electoral victories.
Udenwa emphasized that this transactional approach to elections undermines the emergence of competent leadership and called for reforms to address the pervasive role of money in politics.
