Lagos Reiterates School Flogging Ban and Emphasizes Counseling

Lagos Enforces Ban on Flogging, Promotes Counseling in Schools

Lagos State has reaffirmed its prohibition of corporal punishment in public schools, emphasizing counseling as the preferred method for correcting student misbehavior. The state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, reiterated that flogging is strictly prohibited due to concerns about potential injuries, fainting, or even fatalities resulting from such practices.

Since implementing the ban in 2022, Lagos has observed improvements in student discipline. The government has also introduced the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme in schools to foster a safer learning environment.

Alternative corrective measures endorsed by the state include counseling sessions, as well as minor tasks such as kneeling, picking up litter, or cutting grass within school premises. These approaches aim to promote positive reinforcement and encourage desirable behavior among students.
