Rivers Assembly Demands 2025 Budget from Gov Fubara

Gov Fubara Given 48 Hours for 2025 Budget Presentation

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding he present the 2025 budget for legislative consideration. This decision follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that reinstated the faction led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule as the legitimate legislative body in the state.

In January 2025, Governor Fubara signed a ₦1.1 trillion budget into law after presenting it to a faction of the Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. However, the Supreme Court’s verdict invalidated actions taken by this splinter group, prompting the Amaewhule-led Assembly to request a fresh budget presentation.

The Assembly’s resolution emphasized adherence to constitutional provisions and the recent court order, which halted federal allocations to the state and prohibited spending from the Consolidated Revenue Fund until a duly passed Appropriation Bill is in place. The lawmakers expect Governor Fubara to comply with this directive within the stipulated timeframe.

This development underscores the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, particularly the rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The Assembly’s ultimatum aims to restore constitutional order and ensure proper governance in the state.
