Schools Face Funding Cuts Over ‘Illegal Protests’ Threat
President Donald Trump has announced that federal funding will be withdrawn from educational institutions that permit “illegal protests,” with agitators facing imprisonment or deportation. American students involved in such activities could be expelled or arrested, and the use of masks during protests is prohibited.
This announcement follows the administration’s scrutiny of Columbia University for alleged inaction against anti-Israel protests, leading to a potential withdrawal of over $50 million in government contracts and a review of more than $5 billion in federal grants.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) has criticized Trump’s stance, asserting it contradicts his previous commitments to free expression.
Legal experts note that while the First Amendment protects free speech and peaceful assembly, it does not cover actions involving trespassing, incitement, or civil disobedience that endangers public safety or violates specific laws.
