Tear Gas Deployed Against Natasha Akpoti’s Supporters
On March 5, 2025, supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan gathered at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja to protest in her favor. The demonstrators assembled at the assembly gate around 8:00 a.m., aligning their protest with the Senate’s plenary session and a scheduled hearing by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
The protesters, including members of civil society groups, carried placards with messages such as “Akpabio must go” and “We stand with Senator Natasha,” calling for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio following allegations of sexual harassment made by Akpoti-Uduaghan.
To prevent a potential breach of peace, police officers deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. The demonstrators were subsequently pushed back but regrouped at a nearby location to continue their protest.
This incident occurred amid escalating tensions between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Akpabio, following a dispute over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber on February 20, 2025, and subsequent allegations of sexual harassment.
