August 9: Date Confirmed for Rivers LG Elections
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that fresh local government elections will be held on August 9, 2025. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that annulled the previous elections conducted on October 5, 2024, due to non-compliance with electoral laws.
RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), disclosed the new election date during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on March 5, 2025. He emphasized the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, urging political parties to adhere to established guidelines and campaign procedures.
In the aftermath of the annulled 2024 elections, the Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned Justice Enebeli to explain the conduct of the polls. The Assembly cited concerns over procedural adherence and the need for clarity regarding the election process.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara has expressed his administration’s commitment to upholding constitutional principles. He directed that Heads of Local Government Administration oversee the 23 local government councils until the fresh elections are conducted. The governor also noted that his legal team expects to obtain the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court’s judgment by March 7, 2025.
The forthcoming elections are anticipated to reshape the local governance landscape in Rivers State, especially considering the previous dominance of the Action Peoples Party (APP) in the annulled polls. The APP secured all 23 chairmanship and councillorship seats in the 2024 elections, a result that was later invalidated.
