Neda Imasuen Addresses Allegations Against Senate President
Senator Neda Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, has publicly stated that Senate President Godswill Akpabio has not made any sexual remarks to female senators. In an interview with ARISE NEWS on March 5, 2025, Imasuen emphasized that interactions within the Senate are often lighthearted and that no female senator has lodged complaints of sexual harassment against Akpabio.
Imasuen elaborated that the Senate comprises four female senators, with whom he maintains close relationships, particularly Senator Ireti Kingibe. He noted that the issue at hand pertains to matters of privilege rather than sexual harassment, asserting that Akpabio does not single out female senators for unfair treatment. Imasuen also highlighted that during Senate proceedings, it is common for senators to feel overlooked when not recognized to speak, but this is not indicative of gender discrimination.
These remarks come in the context of allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused Akpabio of sexual harassment following a dispute over seat reassignments in the Senate chamber. Akpoti-Uduaghan formally submitted a petition to the Senate on March 5, 2025, detailing her accusations against the Senate President.
Imasuen has urged patience from the public, assuring that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions will handle the matter with due diligence, and that Akpoti-Uduaghan will receive a fair hearing.
