Carragher Admits Mistake Over AFCON Comments
Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher has issued an apology following backlash over his recent comments regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During a discussion about Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or prospects, Carragher suggested that Salah’s chances were hindered because he hadn’t participated in a “major tournament,” implying that AFCON didn’t hold the same significance as other international competitions.
These remarks were met with widespread criticism. Former Nigerian international John Obi Mikel labeled Carragher’s comments as “ignorant and disrespectful,” urging him to issue a “massive apology.”
Similarly, ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand described the statements as “ignorant,” emphasizing the importance of AFCON to African players and nations.
In response to the criticism, Carragher addressed the issue during a CBS Sports broadcast, acknowledging that his language had been “clumsy” and that he “got it wrong.” He clarified that he never intended to be disrespectful or ignorant and expressed regret for any offense caused. Carragher emphasized his respect for all international tournaments and acknowledged the need to be more careful with his language in the future.
