Minister Announces Tariff Increase Impact on Power Supply

7,000MW Power Generation Target Following Tariff Rise

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has stated that the regularization of electricity tariffs will increase Nigeria’s available power generation capacity to approximately 7,000 megawatts (MW). This increase is expected to result from improved sector liquidity, which encourages investment in power generation.

Recent data indicates that Nigeria’s available power generation has reached a historic peak of 6,003 MW, with a daily maximum energy output of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours (MWh). The government attributes these improvements to the revised electricity tariff structure, which has enhanced liquidity and incentivized performance within the sector.

To sustain these advancements, the government plans to address tariff shortfalls of N1.94 trillion for 2024 and legacy debts of N2 trillion owed to generation companies (GENCOs). The government emphasizes the importance of continuing tariff reforms to ensure consumers pay for the energy consumed, thereby supporting the sector’s financial health and facilitating further improvements in power supply.
