Jose Mourinho Responds to Controversial Remarks on Racism
José Mourinho, the manager of Fenerbahçe, has addressed recent allegations of racism following comments made about rival team Galatasaray. After a 0-0 draw between the two teams, Mourinho remarked that a Slovenian referee was preferable over Turkish referees, stating that with Turkish referees, “after the big dive and the first minute and their bench jumping like monkeys on top of the kids.” These comments led Galatasaray to accuse Mourinho of racism, resulting in a four-match touchline ban, later reduced to two matches upon appeal.
In response, Mourinho has firmly denied the allegations, emphasizing his longstanding connections with Africa and African players. He pointed out that his accusers were unaware of his extensive history with African footballers and charitable work on the continent. Mourinho stated, “They didn’t know my past. They didn’t know my connections with Africa, with African people and African players and African charities.”
He further asserted that racism is “not one of my bad qualities,” positioning himself as the opposite of a racist. Mourinho expressed that the attack accusing him of racism was a misstep, stating, “The attack accusing racism was a bad choice.”
