NBA Impersonator Arrested After Jewelry Heist

Impersonator Steals $770,000 Jewelry, Swallows Evidence

Jaythan Gilder, a 32-year-old from Houston, Texas, was arrested after allegedly stealing two pairs of diamond earrings valued at approximately $770,000 from a Tiffany & Co. store in Orlando, Florida. Posing as a representative for an Orlando Magic basketball player, Gilder gained access to the store’s VIP room on February 26, 2025, where he was shown high-value jewelry, including:

  • A 4.86-carat pair of diamond solitaire earrings worth $160,000.
  • An 8.19-carat pair valued at $609,500.
  • A 5.61-carat diamond solitaire ring priced at $587,000.

During the viewing, Gilder allegedly grabbed the jewelry and attempted to flee, injuring an employee in the process. He managed to escape with the earrings but dropped the ring during the scuffle.

Authorities tracked Gilder’s vehicle using surveillance footage and traffic cameras, apprehending him on February 28 in Washington County, Florida, as he was en route to Texas. During the arrest, Gilder reportedly swallowed the stolen earrings. A body scan conducted at the jail confirmed the presence of foreign objects in his digestive system, believed to be the missing jewelry.

Gilder has been charged with robbery with a mask and first-degree grand theft. He remains in custody at the Orange County Jail, with authorities awaiting the natural recovery of the ingested earrings.

Notably, Gilder has a prior criminal record, including a 2022 theft at a Tiffany & Co. store in Houston, Texas, where DNA evidence linked him to the crime.
