The Maturity of Discourse: Tinubu on Harassment Claims
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has addressed the recent controversy in the Nigerian Senate involving sexual harassment allegations by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Emphasizing the Senate’s stature, Tinubu remarked, “We shouldn’t be hearing things like that. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect.”
Tinubu, who served in the Senate for 12 years, underscored the importance of maintaining the chamber’s dignity and urged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership roles, ensuring they are not sidelined.
The controversy began on February 20, when Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio engaged in a heated debate over seating arrangements in the Senate. Subsequently, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that her challenges in the Senate arose after she rejected Akpabio’s purported advances. She submitted a sexual harassment petition against Akpabio, but the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges dismissed it, citing procedural issues
