Uduaghan Responds: “I Will Set a Ring Light and Microphone”
Delta State Commissioner Orode Uduaghan recently commented on the ongoing controversy involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Nigerian Senate leadership. In a social media post, Uduaghan remarked, “One day I will set a ring light and microphone,” which many interpret as a subtle critique of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent actions in the Senate chamber.
The controversy began on February 20, 2025, when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan protested an unauthorized change to her seating arrangement during a plenary session. Citing Order 10 of the Senate Standing Rules, she expressed dissatisfaction with the alteration, leading to a heated exchange with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The situation escalated, resulting in a temporary disruption of the session.
In response to the incident, Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu emphasized that the Senate is a place for serious legislative business, not content creation.
This statement, coupled with Uduaghan’s comment, suggests a growing sentiment among some officials that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions may be more performative than procedural.
Following the seating dispute, the Senate unanimously voted to refer Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for disciplinary review. The committee, chaired by Senator Neda Imaseun, was tasked with submitting its findings within two weeks.
Subsequently, on March 6, 2025, the Senate suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months after she accused Senate President Akpabio of sexual assault—a claim dismissed by the Senate’s ethics committee due to procedural rule violations. The suspension bars her from her office and withdraws her allowances and security for the duration.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against Senate President Akpabio, seeking significant damages. She maintains that the suspension is unjust and has vowed to challenge it through legal channels.
