Tragic Incident: Six Fatalities in Niger State Tanker Blast
In January 2025, a tragic fuel tanker explosion occurred near Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria, resulting in a significant loss of life. The incident transpired when a petrol tanker overturned at the Dikko junction along the highway connecting Abuja to Kaduna. Local residents, including children, gathered to collect the spilled fuel, during which the gasoline ignited—reportedly upon contact with a generator—leading to a catastrophic explosion.
Initial reports indicated that at least 70 individuals perished in the explosion, with many victims burned beyond recognition. The death toll subsequently rose to 86, as confirmed by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). Additionally, approximately 55 people sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The disaster also caused extensive property damage, with losses estimated in the millions of naira. Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State described the incident as “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.” In response to the tragedy, Nigeria’s first lady, Remi Tinubu, donated 100 million Nigerian naira to support the victims’ families.
