Shehu Sani’s Six-Month Suspension Threat Explained
In 2018, former Nigerian Senator Shehu Sani disclosed that each senator received a monthly running cost allowance of ₦13.5 million, in addition to a consolidated monthly salary of over ₦750,000.
This revelation was unprecedented, as details of lawmakers’ earnings were typically kept confidential.
Recently, Sani reflected on the repercussions he faced following this disclosure. He revealed that he narrowly avoided a six-month suspension from the Senate, attributing his reprieve to the intervention of then-Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.
In a social media post, Sani stated, “When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the Senators, it nearly earned me a six-month suspension if not for divine intervention, Saraki and Ekweremadu’s immediate rescue.”
